The Evolution of MamAmor Dolls - Part II

The first public appearance of a MamAmor Doll was in 2008 at an Attachment Parenting Conference held in Edmonton, AB. I was surprised and pleased with how well the dolls were received and with how sales and orders went on that very first time!

I will always remember and appreciate the first generation of MamAmor dolls’ owners, their support and encouragement was crucial to getting were MamAmor Dolls is right now. Thank you!

Soon after, I opened an Etsy shop and more sales and orders started to come. I needed help, and after a few months, a great team of mama helpers was formed, all working hard to create more and best birthing and nursing mamas.

New fabrics, new clothes’ styles, new fillings, different faces and hair styles were tested and tried, and sales continued to grow and grow.

By 2010, MamAmor Dolls had her own website!

Our Facebook page started to gain
more and more fans and the Media started to sho
w a lot of interest in our special mamas!

The first VBAC
MamAmor was also created in 2010 and many new accessories were included with this new generation of MamAmor Dolls.

So far, 2011 has brought many new MamAmor owners around the world, and we are hoping for more and more to join our little and loving community in the next years to come. Find the Shop and take your own MamAmor Doll home!

The Evolution of MamAmor Dolls - Part I

Did you know that MamAmor Dolls were born almost 4 years ago...and almost by accident?

It was while expecting my third child, and while taking a Doula training course, when my trainer showed me a birthing doll.

I immediately thought ...how brilliant! I will make one for my kids so I can prepare them better for the birth!...It was the perfect toy, at the perfect time!

Since I had done some sewing and stuffed animals in the past, I felt confident that I was going to make a great birthing doll, but it wasn't that easy!

The first doll was small, light and it looked more like a test doll. I put some hair on her but I didn't put eyes as I realized that I wanted something different. My kids didn't think so....so they put a blue face on her!

I looked for patterns on the internet and I took some books about dolls from the library, but didn't find anything close to what I had envisioned. Then, I decided that I would put all that together and make my own and very unique birthing and breastfeeding doll!

A second doll was created...the very first MamAmor Doll!

She was tall, thin and pale, and able to give birth and breastfeed her newborn baby, which was exactly what I wanted! My kids welcomed her with a lot of love and enthusiasm, and my friends and family were so fascinated with the concept that stated to suggest that I should make a few more mamas and try to sell them.

I felt very supported and encouraged to do so... and the first generation of MamAmor Dolls was created!

...And the adventure began!

Custom and Ready to Deliver Dolls - Important Dates for 2011

This year is already looking very busy for MamAmor Dolls so I want to make sure that you know about our plans for Custom Dolls and Ready to Deliver Dolls for the next few months.

If you are thinking about bringing one of our amazing dolls to live with you this year, please take note of this information before placing an order or before purchasing a MamAmor from our Shop.

* Custom Dolls WILL NOT be available during the months of JULY and AUGUST 2011. The summer months are usually too busy for me as my children aren't at school and we like to spend time outside and enjoy the nice weather. Also, some of our team members take holidays and it becomes impossible to attend the demand of Custom Dolls and Ready to Deliver mamas at the same time.

* Custom Dolls WILL NOT be available during the months of DECEMBER 2011 and JANUARY 2012. This is mainly due to my own travel plans as I will be out of the country for 5 weeks visiting my family in Uruguay.

I know....What about Christmas!!!!!

* If you are already thinking about Christmas, I would suggest you to place your order in or before July-August to ensure a spot for a doll delivered the last weeks of November/ first weeks for December.

* The last day to place an order for a Christmas Doll will be September 1rst, 2011.

If you have any questions about Custom Doll Orders, or if you want to request a CUSTOM ORDER FORM, please email me at mamamor.dolls@gmail.com or at info@mamamordolls.com

I will do my best to always have a stock of dolls available at MamAmor's Shop, however, there will be busy times as pre-Christmas for example, where dolls might not be available at all times.

Ready to Deliver Dolls can be uploaded at the shop at anytime and without any announcement, they are dolls we make without timelines. Large uploads are a lot of work and they take too much time, so I prefer small uploads once per week if possible.

The best way to get updates on Ready to Deliver dolls is checking MamAmor's Facebook Page.

Now that you know our plans for this year, be sure to order your Custom doll with time and/or buy your Ready To Deliver when there are dolls available!!! We can't anticipate the demand for the next few months although we always like to think that it will be very high!

It takes more than Vitamin “L”

As the month of LOVE arrives, I thought I would tell you a bit about how a MamAmor doll is created...after all, MamAmor means Mama –LOVE, so the timing is perfect! I hope this is good information for those interested in the process of doll making, but also for those thinking that a MamAmor doll is too expensive. Here is how the MamAmor team creates each mama and baby, and why they are priced as they are.

The first and more important ingredient that goes into making a doll is Vitamin “L”, as our mama helper Janine described the day she decided to be part of our team. Vitamin “L” is free, it is our gift to you, to your daughter or son, your midwife or friend....and it is the essence of every single mama that we create.

Then, materials and time come along, a LOT of time....Lots, and lots of time! Starting from the time needed to select and pick up fabrics, notions, fillings, wool, boxes, tape, treats, knitted items from Niko, diaper and blankets from Janine.....It is very hard to keep track of time in this phase, there is so much involved in this process of creation!

Back home, we start by tracing, cutting, sewing and filling the doll, which takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, with filling being the longest, sometimes more than 2 hours depending on the fabric and the filling-kapok and bamboo fillings take longer.

Assembling each doll is also a long process; it takes anytime from 1.5 to 2 hours not including face and hair. Embroidering eyes and mouth is 10 minutes, and putting hair, anytime from 40 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the hair style and the type of wool.

And we can’t forget the baby! Aside from the time to trace, cut, sew and fill, a longer time is needed to embroil its body, face, ears, belly bottom, little bum and hair, about 30 minutes, plus 10 to 15 minutes for placenta and cord. Snaps on mama and baby, 30 minutes.

Once mama and baby are ready, it is time to get them dressed...but wait...we still have to make the clothes, dresses, pants and tops, skirts and tops....anytime between 1.5 and 2.5 hours depending on styles and custom requests, maybe more if considering designing and ironing! Baby’s cloth diaper and receiving blankets, 15 to 20 minutes. Shoes, ponchos, slings, leg warmers, scarfs....about 1 hour per doll, depending on what she is wearing before she gets to you.

Tag on arm, hair style and ready for pictures! I must say that I underestimated the time needed to take pictures....way longer than expected, but at the same time, needed. I like to show as much as possible of each doll, so I usually take A LOT of pictures, I think the dolls deserve to be seeing from all angles, especially breastfeeding, I love nursing pictures! This process takes at least 15 minutes per doll.

From camera to computer, editing, choosing the best ones, posting on Facebook, uploading them on the Shop, doing the write up with the description...at least other 15 minutes per doll.

And that isn’t the end!!!

Selling takes time as well...very hard to measure but it definitely takes time. Getting the order, sending confirmations and email exchanges with the costumer, printing shipping slips and packing up mama and baby for traveling (including putting essential oil in hair...yes!!! did you smell your doll’s hair yet?- treats and personal hand written cards)....about 40 minutes to 1 hour.

Oh...and the Post Office runs! Love those, especially when my husband does them! It is hardly one package at the time; the largest has been 14 boxes...our van was full!

I am sure I am forgetting to count many other things that we do that are part of this process, but this is a close average of the hours of work put into each doll. About 12+ hours per doll....Surprised?

And the cost of materials isn't included here!... I will leave that one for another post, I will only say that I like to use good quality materials, environmentally friendly and local if possible....mostly expensive stuff, and at times, not easy to find.

More or less, this is about how much time we put into your doll to be created, and this, plus the cost of materials makes the price that you pay for her. Fair, enough, not really...I don't want to even stop to figure out how much we make per hour! Obviously, we not becoming rich by making and selling dolls; it is very hard when I read some people's comments about how ridiculously expensive the dolls are, or about how much money we are making by ripping off people!

MamAmor dolls are here to bring something special and meaningful to the world of birthing and breastfeeding, they are here because we believe that they are worth our time and money, and we intent to keep it that way. So for those of you that appreciate and value our beautiful handmade mamas and see more than their price tag, THANK YOU! Thank you for your continuous support and encouragement, you are not only supporting families but you are also supporting a very important cause!!

We all know that at the end of the day...what make us going isn't really how many dolls we have sold, or how much money per hour we are making, but it is hearing that our work is needed and valued, it is hearing how much a doll is loved by your little one....that makes it all worth it!

This Year...another fantastic one!

It is 10:30pm, I am looking at the window and seeing a slice of moon growing strong in the sky....very white....as white as the snow that I see right below....tons and tons of white snow...

2011 started warm around here, but the cold and the snow didn't wait too long, and tonight, we'll have -34 degrees! So, I am thinking on all the things I will be doing "indoors" these next few days....hopefully catching up with Custom Doll orders!!!

Wonderful 2011 is here and here we go MamAmor!!!....Ready for another fantastic year! This will be a year of changes, on the personal and on the business level...so...get ready!

A few conferences and shows are still to be confirmed for this year, but MamAmor will travel out of Canada a couple of times for sure, maybe more, depending on how much work awaits here at home. I'll share the details when things are confirmed, I am still working on it.

I'll be working on a bigger MamAmor team this year, as the center of the business, these amazing mama helpers who work so hard to make sure each mama leaves as its best; thanks Janine, Jenny Rae, Lisa, Anne, Niko and Graciela for your work of love.

I'll be writing a long post about How MamAmor Dolls are made very soon, I have been thinking about that for a long time, I just need the time to put together some pictures and to write a few paragraphs about the making of my amazing mamas....Can't wait to share that with you!

There will be a few updates on MamAmor's website, hopefully a Spanish page ....and we'll continue working with Bigcartel as MamAmor's Shop , it is working very well so far, visit the shop HERE for dolls available and for dates on new uploads.

I'll be posting deadlines for Christmas Order for next year very soon... already? Yes!!! already! I'll be traveling south for the holidays this year so Christmas orders will be done earlier, for instance, the orders will have to come earlier! More to come on this, but I thought I would let you know in advance just in case you are thinking about a MamAmor as a gift for next Christmas.

And of course, we'll have at few Giveaways for our fabulous friends! Stay tunned for details on the first one coming up very soon!

Moon is gone...snow is still here...and I need to get to my white sheets....love white...but can't wait for the colors of the spring!

Back soon...
